Why the name spread

It is a description, not a pedigree. "Kush" names the indica side that most versions claim, from Master Kush and Afghan Kush to Chitral Kush and Pakistani Kush, and "Lemon" the limonene-led aroma that Weedmaps, AllBud and Humboldt Seed Company all cite, so a seed company can arrive at the same name from different parents.^{6,11,19,20,21,22,23} SeedFinder lists eight breeders’ versions, and Leafly covers them all under one entry with 1,276 ratings.^1,3

The name also travels on other strains. Lemon Kush Headband, Lemon Kush Mints, Lemon OG Kush and Super Lemon Kush all appear on menus and in lab records, and in our dataset "Lemon Kush Headband" alone outnumbers plain Lemon Kush about 4 to 1.^4,14,24,25

A footnote in other places

Wikipedia’s article on cannabis illustrates plant morphology with photographs captioned "Male Lemon Kush cannabis plant (12 foot plant)" and "Male Lemon Kush cannabis Flowers", although the strain has no article of its own.²⁶ Two recordings borrow the name: Ozric Tentacles’ "Lemon Kush" on Paper Monkeys (2011) and Curren$y’s freestyle over Gucci Mane’s "Lemonade".^5,13

The disputed parts of the story

• Parents: Master Kush × Lemon Joy (Leafly’s text), Afghani × Master Kush (Leafly’s chart), Lemon G × Afghan Kush (Alien Genetics, repeated by Weedmaps and AllBud), and eight seed pedigrees (see genetics).^1,3,22,23
• Lemon Joy: named as a parent by Leafly, Weedmaps and Wikileaf, yet Leafly has no page for it and we found no breeder record.^1,22,27
• Lemon Kush Headband: Weedmaps calls it Lemon Kush × Headband from "Humboldt Seed Company"; the breeding account on Humboldt Seed Organization’s site names no Lemon Kush parent.^14,28
• Dates: none of the breeder accounts is dated; Alien Genetics’ note says only that the cross was made "3-4 years ago" at the time of writing.²
