Lemon Kush genetics: parents, seed versions and family tree

What Leafly’s page says, twice

Leafly’s description reads: "The general consensus surrounding Lemon Kush is that is a cross between Master Kush and Lemon Joy. However, breeder specific variations exist," and quotes Alien Genetics calling its version "a hybrid between Lemon G, a prized strain from Ohio, and an Afghan Kush."¹ The genetics chart on the same page shows two different parents, Afghani and Master Kush.¹ Leafly’s Master Kush and Lemon G pages both list Lemon Kush as a child; its Afghani and Afghan Kush pages do not, and Leafly has no Lemon Joy page at all.^9,10,11,12

How indica is it?

Every database calls Lemon Kush a hybrid, and Leafly rates its effects mostly energizing, but the seed versions lean indica: 75% for Humboldt Seed Company, "Indica +60%" for Female Seeds’ line at Alchimia, about 70% for Plantation Premium Seeds, and "mostly indica" for Zambeza, United Cannabis Seeds and Alien Genetics.^{1,2,17,21,22,23,24} AllBud splits it 50:50, and Variety of Cannabis sells a sativa-dominant plant under the name.^14,26 Wikileaf notes that the tight, dense buds look more indica than sativa.¹⁵

Alien Genetics’ Lemon Kush was never sold on its own

The most detailed breeder account comes from Alien Genetics, whose note on SeedFinder says it made Lemon Kush from a clone-only Lemon G "sourced from a friend in Ohio", pollinated by a landrace Afghani Kush male, and that "the Lemon Kush in the Lemon Alien Dawg is a proprietary strain that has never been let out of the mothership in pure form."² That version exists in the trade only as a parent: Lemon Alien Dawg is an Alien Dawg F1 female × Lemon Kush male, listed as 60/40 indica with 56–63 days of flowering, and Leafly lists it at 17% THC with 77 ratings.^7,27 Flower sold as "Lemon Kush" is therefore unlikely to be Alien Genetics’ plant, even though Weedmaps, AllBud and Leafly all repeat its Lemon G × Afghan Kush pedigree.^1,13,14

The named parents

Master Kush is an indica that Leafly says was "crossed from two landrace strains from different parts of the Hindu Kush region by the Dutch White Label Seed Company in Amsterdam"; Leafly lists it at 17% THC with sleepy, relaxed and tingly as its top effects, and names Lemon Kush as its first child.⁹

Lemon G is a sativa Leafly calls "the pride of Ohio" that "descends from Original G13". Weedmaps says the original circulated as a clone-only selection from an unidentified breeder, with several versions and three proposed lineages (G13 × Kali Mist, G13 × Early Misty, G13 × Northern Lights), and High Times called its lineage "somewhat of a mystery" in a 2016 review.^10,28,29

Afghan Kush, in Leafly’s description, traces back to the Hindu Kush mountain range near the Afghanistan–Pakistan border, with Afghani as its parent and seeds made available by White Label Seed Company; Leafly’s Afghani page describes an indica named after its geographic origin. Neither page lists Lemon Kush as a child.^11,12

Lemon Joy, the better-known half of the "consensus" pedigree, has no Leafly page and no breeder record that we could find; United Cannabis Seeds spells it "Lemon Jo".^1,23

What our lab data adds

In state lab records, plain Lemon Kush is outnumbered by near-miss names. Our strict matching kept only 29 flower tests against 251 results across all product types (151 of them flower) tested under names such as "Lemon Kush Headband" (119 results) and "Super Lemon Kush" (54) and "Sugar Lemon Kush" (16), plus crosses such as "Sunshine × Lemon Kush Mintz".⁴ Each of those is a different strain or a cross, and the lab records carry no pedigree, so the 29 matched tests cannot say which breeder’s Lemon Kush they were.⁴
